12

Virginia Union University Athletics issued the following announcement on Dec. 3

Virginia Union University's men's basketball team, down by 15 with less than 10 minutes left to play, put on a late-game offensive assault which lifted the Panthers to a 75-72 win over Salem University on Friday, December 3, in Salem, W.V.

VUU was down 65-50 with 9:38 left to play when Virginia Union went on a 14-3 run to pull within 68-64 with 4:57 left to play.

The Panthers finally pulled even and then ahead when Devon Sims hit two free throws with 40 seconds left to play.  Sims hit two more from the charity stripe to seal the game with 24 seconds left.

"The guys showed a lot of heart to get down by 15 points with 9 minutes to play and to fight back and get this win was a huge win on the road," said VUU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jay Butler. "I thought Jordan Peebles and Darius Hines showed a lot of leadership and toughness in the second half. The bench gave us some good minutes in the second half. Robbie Osborne, Kaylen Vines, and Devon Sims help us closed out the game with key plays down the stretch."

Peebles led the Panthers in scoring with 15 points while Robert Osborne had 13 points. VUU's Darius Hines added 11 points in the win.

Peebles also led VUU on the boards with nine rebounds.

The win raised Virginia Union's record to 5-2 on the season while Salem fell to 4-4.

Virginia Union now travels to Shepherdstown, W.V., to face Shepherd University at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 11.
