Virginia Union University Will Host the 44th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Leaders Celebration in Partnership with Local Stations

Virginia Union University issued the following announcement on Dec. 31

Virginia Union University (VUU) will host the 44th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Leaders Celebration on Monday, January 17, 2022, in partnership with Living the Dream, Inc., Dominion Energy, WTVR (CBS 6) and WGNT (CW 27). This is the second year VUU has partnered with WTVR to broadcast and stream the event throughout the Richmond and Hampton Roads areas. 

“CBS 6 is once again grateful to partner with Virginia Union University in providing unique programming honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King. It is a tremendous opportunity to recognize those individuals and organizations who continue to live out Dr. King’s vision,” said Stephen Hayes, General Manager of WTVR and WGNT. 

MLK Beloved Community awardees fall into one of seven categories: legacy, faith, art, health, educational equity, social justice, and economic justice. This year's award recipients are: 

  • The Richmond and Henrico Health Districts – Health Equity 
  • Clovia Lawrence and Sandra Antoine for Operation Stamp the Vote – Social Justice 
  • Reverend Dr. Robert Winfree and New Life Deliverance Tabernacle – Faith 
  • Janine Bell and the Elegba Folklore Society – Art and Culture 
  • An Achievable Dream Inc. (Richmond and Hampton Roads) - Education 
  • Ujima Legacy Fund and SisterFund – Economic Justice 
  • The Honorable Willie J. Dell – MLK Beloved Community Legacy Award 
“We are pleased to partner again with Living the Dream, Inc., Dominion Energy and WTVR to bring this celebration into thousands of households throughout Richmond and Hampton Roads,” said Dr. Hakim J. Lucas, President and CEO of Virginia Union University. “During this celebration, we will not only reflect on Dr. King’s legacy and his local impact, but also recognize local and regional leaders and organizations whose efforts embody Dr. King’s spirit of selfless giving for the benefit of our ‘beloved community’.”
