Virginia Union University Athletics recently issued the following announcement.
Virginia Union University's Rodney McKay, a member of the 2021 VUU Football Team, will be playing for the National Championship of the Madden NFL 22 X HBCU Tournament at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, in Los Angeles, Cal.
McKay, who was a running back on the 2021 Panther Football Team, will take on Eric Minor from Claflin University. The match will air on the NFL YouTube channel and the NFL Twitch channel.
"This is a great opportunity for me to be here," said McKay. "I'm blessed to be able to represent Virginia Union in this amazing event."
McKay said he plays Madden NFL 22 up to "six or seven hours per day" in preparation for the National Championship, but that he didn't let his game-playing interfere with his schoolwork or college football. In the 2021 season he was a great contributor to the running back rotation of the Panthers.
McKay graduated with a degree in computer information systems and is now in Graduate School at VUU studying business.
McKay is also being invited by EA Sports to attend Super Bowl LVI when the Cincinnati Bengals meet the Los Angeles Rams in SoFi Stadium on Sunday, February 13.
McKay said the winner of the National Championship will receive a cash award of $7,500, a Playstation console and a customized personal controller in addition to a trophy.
"We are very happy for Rodney McKay, one of our outstanding student-athletes," said Joe Taylor, Virginia Union University Vice-President for Intercollegiate Athletics and Community Wellness. "His commitment and dedication has not only afforded him an undergraduate degree and success on the football field but the opportunity to compete on the National level in EA Sports and attend the Super Bowl are great opportunities. We are cheering for his continued success this Saturday and he makes all of VUU Nation very proud!"
