Baseball Win Streak Snapped by JMU

29

University of Richmond Athletic Department issued the following announcement on March 2

The University of Richmond baseball team scored first, but were unable to fully quiet the bats of James Madison on Wednesday, falling 9-2 at Pitt Field.

The Spiders fall to 6-2 on the year while the Dukes move to 6-3.

Richmond got on the board in the first inning, when Jake Elbeery (North Andover, Mass.) doubled down the left field line to score Dominic Toso (Philadelphia, Pa.). Toso hit a two-out base hit up the middle to extend his hit streak to eight games.

Spider starter Josh Willitts (Southampton, N.J.) worked around pesky JMU runners in each of his 4.2 innings of work. He didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning, struck out five, including striking out the side in the third, walked four and hit two.

James Madison tied the game in the sixth inning, picking up a run on a sacrifice fly to left field.

Richmond retook the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Alden Mathes (Broomall, Pa.) lead off the inning with a double, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a wild pitch. Mathes also had nine put outs in center field and assisted on a double play in the fourth.

JMU broke open the game in the seventh, scoring six runs on five hits, including three home runs, and working through three Richmond pitchers. Esteban Rodriguez (Doral, Fla.) took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks, with one strikeout.

The Dukes tagged UR reliever Cole Hentschel (Pine Bush, N.Y.) for two more runs in the eighth. Vincent Corso (West Harrison, N.Y.) took over, getting the final out in the eighth and threw a scoreless ninth, including a strikeout.

Richmond is back in action Saturday, March 5 when they host Rutgers at Pitt Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN Plus.
