Virginia Union University's Nevaeh Johnson has been named the CIAA Offensive Player of the Week while teammate Dominique Mulero has been named the CIAA Pitcher of the Week, it was announced on Monday, March 7.
In five games, Johnson, a freshman from Baltimore, Md., went 7-for-13 with a home run and two doubles. Johnson drove in five runs and finished with a .923 slugging percentage for the week. Johnson also registered two stolen bases and scored three runs to help the Panthers finish 3-1 on the week with a win over Mercy College and a sweep of Washington Adventist.
In three appearances on the mound, Mulero, a graduate student from Chatham, Va., finished with a 1-1 record and registered a save, helping VUU to wins over Mercy and Washington Adventist. Mulero struck out five batters and finished with a 3.00 earned run average for the week. Mulero also registered five hits with a home run and two runs batted in from the plate.
"It's good for the team," said VUU Head Softball Coach Fred Burroughs. "It's a team goal that somebody has to do well like they did well last week. Now I need someone to step up this week and do well while those two should just continue to do what they're doing."
VUU will face Bluefield State College at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11, at Panther Park in Richmond, Va.
