Softball Season Ends in CIAA Tournament

42

Virginia Union University's softball team defeated Virginia State University 4-3 in the opening game of the CIAA Tournament, but the Trojans eliminated VUU by downing the Panthers 10-2 in the second game on Tuesday, May 3, in Petersburg, Va.

In the first game, VUU's Dominique Mulero struck out four while allowing no earned runs to power the Panthers on the mound.

Virginia Union opened the scoring in the second inning when Diamond Jones reached on a fielder's choice.  Jones then scored on a single by teammate Darnae Jones.

After VSU tied the score in the bottom of the inning, VUU went back into the lead in the third inning on a double by Mulero and a single by Diamond Jones.

The Panthers scored the eventual winning run in the fourth inning when Brenda Reninga doubled, and then scored on a single by Arianna Burford.

In the second game, VSU shot out to a 10-0 lead after scoring seven runs in the second inning off Mulero and then three more in the third inning off relief pitcher Mya Lowe.

"The Lady Panther's went 15-11 and made the Quarterfinals," said VUU Head Softball Coach Fred Burroughs. "We were led by Dominique Mulero making 2nd team All-CIAA. Arianna Burford was a steady force. Brenda Reninga & Mya Tino had a solid season. Nevaeh Johnson showed she is a future player. The team statistically led the CIAA in several categories. Hopefully with some solid recruiting we will be a force in the conference."
