Lopez-Ayala & Franklin Earn Volleyball Player of the Week Honors
Virginia Union University's Amilex Lopez-Ayala and Ashlee Franklin have been named Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week and Setter of the Week, respectively, the CIAA announced on Tuesday, September 14.
Lopez-Ayala, who is majoring in Entrepreneurial Management, recorded 43 kills in three games across the week. In the lone win against Goldey-Beacom, she recorded a career-high 24 kills and she had a .315 hitting percentage. The senior also had a season-high 20 digs in that game. The Guayama, PR native also logged 14 kills and 11 digs (both team-highs) versus Bluefield State.
In three games this week, Franklin totaled 82 assists, including a career-high 36 assists in the win versus Goldey-Beacom. The Woodbridge, VA native, who is majoring in Criminology, also had a career-high 16 digs in that game. The freshman added 29 assists against Bluefield State. Over the week, the freshman also tallied 26 digs, four kills, and two total blocks.
"I am really proud of Ashley and Ami," said VUU Head Volleyball Coach Joe Sullivan. "Both ladies are hard workers both in the gym and on the court. They are always laser focused on improving their game to help with team success! Both were well deserved!"
Virginia Union travels to Elizabeth City, N.C., to face the Vikings in the Lady Panthers' CIAA opener at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 15.
