Golf Competes in Folds of Honor Intercollegiate Golf Tournament

The Virginia Union University golf team competed in the Inaugural Folds of Honor Golf Tournament on September 26th – 28th, 2022. The Folds of Honor Collegiate Tournament was contested at The American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Michigan. American Dunes Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course that is a tribute to the military and commemorates the birthplace of Folds of Honor. The facility, which is located a few hundred yards from the east shore of Lake Michigan, is a dunes-like course, utilizing the dramatic local topography and sand base that covers the property. The course is a par 72 that measures 7,213 yards and has rolling and generous fairways.

The field consisted of 18 NCAA Teams.  Sixteen Team were D-I's, and two Teams were D-II's. D-I Conferences represented 3-Atlantic Coast Conference Teams, (Florida State University, NC State and Clemson University), 1 Army West Athletic Conference, 2-Big 10 Conference (University of Illinois, Michigan State University), 1-Big 12 Athletic Conference (Kansas State University), Big South Conference, Mid-America Athletic Conference, Mountain West Athletic Conference, 2-PAC 12 Athletic Conference (Oregon State University and UCLA), Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and The Western Athletic Conference).  DII Conference Schools 1-Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (Virginia Union University and 1-The Great Lakes Athletic Conference (Grand Valley State University).

VUU Team scoring was led by Hayden Garcia, 1st Year Grad Student, tied for 62 with a score of 235 (81/82/72), along with Travon Willis, Senior tied for 62 with a score of 235 (79/74/82), followed by  Alkin Barkley, 1st Year Grad Student, tied for 79 with a score of 247 (80/78/89), Zaccheus Spann tied for 82 with a score of 250 (87/83/80) and Ahmad Reedus 3finished 85th, with a score of 252(89/78/85).  

"We have continued to have a lot of firsts for the VUU Golf Team," said VUU Head Golf Coach E. Lee Coble.  "Being selected to play in the Inaugural Tournament was a tremendous opportunity and a great experience for each member of the golf team. They got a chance to play with some of the best collegiate golfers in the Country.  While the weather made it a bit more challenging; I am immensely proud of the way the guys persevered to the finish. I continue to be immensely proud of the accomplishments of our VUU Golf Team."
