Lopez-Ayala Named CIAA Offensive Player of the Week
Virginia Union University's Amilex Lopez-Ayala has been named the CIAA's Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week, the CIAA announced on Tuesday, October 11.
Lopez-Ayala tallied 75 points, 64 kills, a hitting percentage of .318, 36 digs, 9 service aces, and four total blocks in four contests last week. The senior led the team in kills in all four matches, recording at least 12 kills in each match as Virginia Union posted a 3-1 record in conference play. The Guayama, PR native had 19 kills (.361 hitting percentage) and 11 digs in the three-set win against Claflin and then had 20 kills and three aces in a five-set loss to Fayetteville State. In the win over Livingstone, Lopez-Ayala registered 12 kills, 10 digs, and five aces and she had 13 kills in the win over Lincoln (PA).
"Ami is a fierce competitor, playing with pure heart and fire," said VUU Head Volleyball Coach Joe Sullivan. "She is a great leader, always leading by example both on and off the court! Definitely a well deserved honor!"
Virginia Union will travel to Raleigh, N.C., to face Shaw University at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 13.
