Spukhaus 2022
Spukhaus, an annual immersive art experience presented by The Anderson and the Art Foundation Program of the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, was held Friday and Saturday and drew a steady stream of spook seekers who took guided tours of the multi-floor “haunted house” art installations.
Nearly 300 students from a dozen Art Foundation classes participated in this year’s fourth annual Spukhaus, creating atmospheric, immersive and experimental collaborative art. One red-lit room was an abattoir filled with massive, stuffed fabric organs hanging from the ceiling. Another invited onlookers to follow clues, connected by red string, to solve a grisly murder at a party. Yet another featured inflatable monsters hooked up to fans that made them twitch creepily, while unsettling films were projected on the walls.
At the end of the tour, visitors were treated to live screen printing and button making by a team of 11 students led by Brooke Inman, a professor in the Department of Painting + Printmaking, who printed Spukhaus skulls, witches and ghosts on tote bags and prints.
