Women’s Basketball Picks Up Fourth Road Victory at Elon

The University of Richmond women's basketball team collected the program's first victory over Elon University Thursday, picking up a 63-51 victory on Education Day at the Schar Center.
 
Richmond, now 8-3 on the season, stays on the road for two more games, taking on Ball State (Dec. 20) and Tarleton State (Dec. 21) in the Puerto Rico Classico in San Juan. Both games are set to tip at 3 p.m. on FloSports. (Subscription needed.) UR returns to the Robins Center on Dec. 31 to open Atlantic 10 Conference play against George Washington at noon on ESPN+.
 
Elon held a slim lead after the first quarter, 26-23, as both teams shot over 60 percent from the field. The squads exchanged five ties and three lead changes.
 
After giving up 26 points in the first quarter, Richmond held Elon to 25 points over the next 30 minutes of action. Richmond stayed hot to finish at a 56.6 (26-for-46) percent clip for the game.
 
The Spiders quieted 3,000-plus elementary school kids in the stands in the second quarter, taking a 39-33 lead in to the half. Addie Budnik finished the half with 12 of her game-high 15 points, going 5-for-5 from the field, with two three pointers, two steals, two rebounds and a block. Grace Townsend chipped in seven points, while Emilija Krista Grava, Katie Hill and Rachel Ullstrom all tallied five points. Richmond finished the half with 22 points in the paint and a slim lead in rebounds (16-14).
 
In the second half, the Spiders kept finding ways to score while getting defensive stops. Grava added five more points, including a three-pointer to open the third quarter, and three rebounds to finish with 10 points and four boards. Townsend tallied five more points and four assists to finish with 12 points and six assists, as well as five rebounds and two steals. Hill was the fourth Spider to finish in double figures, driving to the basket for six of her 11 points, while collecting four steals in the second half.
