Washington, D.C. – On June 6, Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) issued the following statement on the shooting at the Altria Theater after the Huguenot High School graduation:
“First and foremost, I would like to extend my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the individuals who died in tonight’s shooting, and I pray for the recovery of the other victims who were injured. Second, my thoughts are with those who were traumatized by the horrific events that unfolded at what should have been a joyous occasion. Tonight’s celebration turned into every parent’s worst nightmare. As a Richmond public school parent, I cannot fathom the profound heartbreak, sense of loss and trauma these families are experiencing.
“The gun violence epidemic is a public health crisis that we must address. We cannot continue to live in fear. We must address the root causes of gun violence and pass common sense gun safety policies that protect our communities. I will continue to do everything in my power to advance policies that protect the safety and well-being of Virginians. Tonight, I join Huguenot High School, the Richmond Public School family, the City of Richmond, and our Commonwealth in mourning this senseless tragedy.
“My staff and I continue to monitor developments in the investigation and encourage anyone impacted by this tragedy who needs to speak to a counselor to call the Richmond Behavioral Health Authority at (804) 819-4100 or the ChildSavers Immediate Response Helpline at (804) 305-2420.”
