85 coaches at institutions in Richmond city earned $163,448 on average in 2022

Richmond city’s 85 coaches earned an average salary of $163,448 in 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

This is the fourth highest average salary per county earned by coaches at Virginia post-secondary schools during 2022.

Richmond city is home to three post-secondary schools that paid coaches during 2022. Among them, Virginia Commonwealth University stood out with the highest average coaching salary of $261,740.

Male coaches of men's teams received $206,830 on average in Richmond city, while female coaches in charge of women's teams earned an average of $90,643.

Research from the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management found NCAA coaches are compensated like CEOs, with top coaches earning more than $1.5 million annually.
