Road closures and a sound advisory have been announced for the inauguration of Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, scheduled to take place at noon on Saturday, January 17, 2026, in Capitol Square in Richmond.

Several streets surrounding the Capitol complex will be closed starting at 7 a.m. to accommodate the event. Roads are expected to reopen around 4 p.m. The specific street closures include N. 9th Street between Main and Broad Streets, Grace Street between 8th and 9th Streets, and Bank Street between 9th and 12th Streets beginning at 7:00 a.m. Additional closures begin at 8:30 a.m., affecting eastbound Broad Street between 9th and 14th Streets (open only to event traffic), eastbound Broad Street between 7th and 9th Streets, and N. 14th Street between Broad and Main Streets. At 12:30 p.m., N. 8th Street between Broad and Grace Streets will also close.

The public is advised to expect loud noises during the ceremony. “The public should also expect loud blasts on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, at approximately 12:31 p.m. around Richmond’s Capitol Square and downtown area. Members of the Virginia Army National Guard will conduct a howitzer cannon fire and artillery salute, and members of the Virginia Air National Guard will conduct a miliary aircraft flyover as a scheduled part of the inauguration ceremony. There is no risk to public safety.”
