VCU baseball defeated Davidson 12-9 on May 16, with catcher Teige Lethert hitting a three-run walk-off home run in the final game at The Diamond. The Rams honored seven seniors before the game and completed a weekend sweep of Davidson.
The victory marked VCU’s program record 20th conference win, while their three home runs brought their season total to 62, just four short of the team record. The Rams struck out 15 batters in the game and reached a total of 41 strikeouts for the weekend series.
Alec Warden led VCU offensively with three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs. Both Lethert and Nick Flores recorded two hits each, also hitting home runs. On the mound, Dawson Newman started for VCU with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts. Hunter Gotschall pitched the final 3.1 innings, allowing only one unearned run while striking out six to earn his third win as a Ram.
The Rams built an early lead but saw Davidson tie the game at nine in the eighth inning after several back-and-forth scoring frames. In the bottom of the ninth inning, following a single by Warden and a two-out walk by Petite, Lethert delivered his decisive homer to secure both the win and sweep for VCU.
VCU will advance as the No. 3 seed to play No. 6 seed Davidson again at Capital One Park in Tysons on Wednesday, May 20 during the Atlantic 10 Championship.
