Three players from Virginia Commonwealth University were named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference team, with freshman Carson Looney earning the league’s Rookie of the Year honor, according to a May 12 announcement by the Atlantic 10 Conference.
The recognition highlights individual achievements for VCU’s golf program during this season. The awards reflect both strong performances and development among newcomers and transfers on the team.
Looney, a freshman from Bethesda, Maryland, is the fifth VCU player to receive Rookie of the Year since VCU joined the Atlantic 10 in 2012-13. He led his team in scoring average at 72.21 and secured first-place finishes at both the Monterrey Collegiate Classic in Mexico and Donald Ross Intercollegiate in North Carolina. Looney was also VCU’s top performer at this year’s Atlantic 10 Championship held April 27–29, finishing second overall after shooting nine under par (67-71-69).
Graduate student Mason Minkel returned for spring competition after missing fall events and became one of VCU’s leading players down the stretch. In five spring tournaments, Minkel posted a stroke average of 72.53—third-best on his team—and was top finisher for VCU at both Giles-Spratley Collegiate and Mountaineer Invitational.
Sophomore Tanner Cadieux recorded a scoring average of 72.46—the second-best on his squad—and set a season low round for any Ram golfer with a score of 65 during Bentwater Intercollegiate in Texas. Cadieux went seven under par (70-71-65) to claim his first collegiate medalist honor at that event.
The honors mark continued success for individual Rams athletes as they progress through their college careers.
