VCU baseball won against Davidson with a score of 7-4 in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championship on May 20 at Capital One Park in Tysons, Virginia.
The win marks VCU’s fourth consecutive victory over Davidson and their tenth win out of the last eleven games. The Rams overcame an hour and fourteen minutes of lightning delays, scoring five runs after play resumed to secure the comeback.
Dawson Newman and Zach Peters combined for five shutout innings from the bullpen, allowing only one hit. Patrick Steitz started for VCU, giving up just two earned runs over four innings before his outing was cut short by weather. Offensively, Dante DeFranco, Michael Petite, Jacob Lee, and Nate Kirkpatrick each had two hits. Teige Lethert scored twice while Kirkpatrick and Alec Warden drove in VCU’s final four runs.
Head Coach Sean Thompson reached his fiftieth win as head coach of the Rams with this game and recorded his first Atlantic 10 Championship victory. “Sean Thompson reached his 50th win as head coach of the Rams and his first Atlantic 10 Championship victory,” according to VCU Rams Men’s Baseball.
VCU will face No. 2 Richmond at Capital One Park on Thursday, May 21 at 4 p.m., aiming to advance to Friday’s semifinals.
