VCU baseball defeated Davidson by a score of 9-7 on May 15 in Richmond, Virginia, securing their final regular season series win. The Rams recorded double-digit hits for the fourth straight game and matched their season-high with 17 strikeouts from three pitchers.
The result is significant as it ties VCU’s record for most conference wins in a single Atlantic 10 season at 19, a mark last reached during the program’s championship run in 2022. The team continues to build momentum heading into postseason play.
Nick Flores led VCU offensively with three hits, including two doubles and four runs batted in. Michael Petite contributed two runs, two hits, and two RBI while extending his reached-base streak to 23 games. Alec Warden also extended his streak to 20 games. On the mound, Eli Holbert struck out seven over four and two-thirds innings but allowed five runs. Cooper Weygandt pitched one inning with three strikeouts and gave up an unearned run. Zach Peters matched Holbert’s seven strikeouts over three innings to earn the win.
The Rams built an early lead with timely hitting from Flores and Petite before Davidson rallied to tie the game at six after six innings. In the seventh inning, VCU regained the lead on Warden’s single following a double by Flores. Two more insurance runs came in the eighth inning off another double by Flores, helping secure victory as Peters stranded three Wildcats on base in the ninth.
Looking ahead, VCU will attempt to set a new program record for conference wins when they face Davidson again at home on May 16 at 1 p.m., while aiming for the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament. Seven departing seniors will be honored prior to Saturday’s game.
