VCU baseball defeated Longwood 6-4 in a ten-inning game in Farmville, Va., on April 7. The Rams scored two runs in the tenth inning to secure the win and completed a season series sweep over Longwood.
The result marks VCU’s eighteenth victory of the season, surpassing last year’s total for most wins during Coach Sean Thompson’s tenure through just 32 games. The game featured strong performances from several players, with VCU collecting ten hits and drawing ten free passes, including five walks and five hit-by-pitches.
Dante DeFranco, Michael Petite, and Alec Warden each had multiple hits for the Rams. Warden contributed two hits and drove in two runs. Jacob Lee recorded his ninety-ninth career hit during the contest. Junior right-handed pitcher Nick Frers started for VCU with three scoreless innings, allowing only two hits while matching his career-best with five strikeouts. Caleb Clover made his third consecutive scoreless appearance out of the bullpen.
The Rams built an early four-run lead with run-scoring singles from Warden and Petite along with a bases-loaded hit by pitch from Quinn Maher. Longwood responded by tying the game at four over the next three innings through three RBI singles. Relievers Clover and Cooper Campbell combined for four scoreless frames to keep VCU in contention before extra innings.
In the tenth inning, Warden led off with a walk followed by singles from Brendan Horne and DeFranco to drive in what proved to be the winning run. Lee added an insurance run before Campbell finished out the game by inducing a double play.
Looking ahead, VCU will end its road trip with a three-game series at Fordham from April 10 to April 12 as they aim to continue their recent momentum.
