VCU men’s tennis began its Atlantic 10 tournament campaign with a 4-1 victory over Davidson on April 23 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
The match was significant as it marked the start of VCU’s effort to defend its 2025 conference title and continue an eight-year streak of Atlantic 10 championships. The Rams entered the contest having won all five previous meetings against Davidson, including four sweeps and a recent regular-season win.
In doubles play, Alfred Almasi and Nicolo Consonni overcame an early deficit to win their match on Court 2 by a score of 6-4. Mats Bredschneijder and Leon Zaorski also secured a doubles victory for VCU with a close 7-5 result on Court 3. The pairing of Gevorg Mnatsakanyan and Patrik Petera led their match before play was halted.
Bredschneijder gave VCU its first singles point with a straight-set win, while Petera added another point by dominating his opponent on Court 5. Almasi clinched the overall team victory with his third deciding singles point this season, winning in two sets after recovering from losing several games late in the first set.
With this result, VCU improved its record to eight wins and thirteen losses for the season while Davidson dropped to five wins and fourteen losses. The Rams will next face Richmond for a chance to advance to the Atlantic 10 Championship final.
