VCU men’s tennis defeated Saint Joseph’s 4-0 on April 18 at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Virginia. The Rams secured the doubles point and won three singles matches to clinch the victory on Senior Day.
The win is significant as it keeps VCU unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play and extends their all-time record against Saint Joseph’s to a perfect 7-0. The result also comes against a Hawks team that had recently won eight of their last ten matches.
Head Coach Dimi Kutrovsky said, “Glad we were able to defend home court on senior day. Good doubles, and we stayed tough in the big moments. Shows some growth even if we didn’t play our best tennis we were able to get the win. Looking forward to a-10 next week!”
In doubles action, Mats Bredschneijder and Leon Zaorski won their match on Court 2 with a score of 6-4, while Alfred Almasi and Nicolo Consonni secured a win on Court 3 with a score of 6-2. The match on Court 1 was stopped at four games each.
During singles play, Patrik Petera delivered a strong performance with a straight sets victory (6-1, 6-1) on Court 5. Nicolo Consonni followed with another win (6-3, 7-6) on Court 3 after holding off his opponent in a tiebreaker. Gevorg Mnatsakanyan clinched the overall match for VCU by coming back from behind in his second set to defeat Santiago Valle (6-1, 7-6) on Court 1.
Other singles matches involving Alfred Almasi, Mats Bredschneijder, and Leon Zaorski were left unfinished but showed competitive play before being halted due to VCU securing enough points for victory.
Looking ahead, VCU will compete in the Atlantic 10 Tournament in Orlando as they aim to continue their success within the conference.
