Freshman Carson Looney shot a 1-under-par 71 as Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) stayed close to the lead on Apr. 28 during the second round of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship in Orlando, Florida.
The tournament matters for VCU as they compete for both individual and team honors at the Evermore Resort and Golf Club. After two rounds, VCU is tied for second place with Richmond at one-over-par, four strokes behind George Mason, which leads at three-under heading into Wednesday’s final round.
Looney began Tuesday atop the leaderboard and made a strong push on the back nine with birdies on holes 10, 11, and 13. He finished his round in second place overall at six-under-par after two days. Sophomore Tanner Cadieux improved his standing by shooting a two-under-par 70 following an opening-round score of 74, moving into a tie for twelfth place. Seniors Braden O’Grady and Zach Felts are tied for twenty-sixth at four-over-par each.
In team scoring through thirty-six holes, VCU posted rounds of 285 and 292 for a total score of 577. The Rams lead all teams in par-5 scoring average at 4.75 per hole. Looney has only two bogeys over two rounds—tied for fewest among all players.
The championship will conclude Wednesday morning with the final round in Orlando.
