VCU baseball secured its fourth Atlantic 10 Championship in six years with a 9-1 victory over Rhode Island at Capital One Park in Tysons, Va., on May 24. The Rams improved their record to 37-23 (20-10), while Rhode Island finished at 26-31 (16-14).
Jacob Lee was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and was joined by Zach Peters and Dante DeFranco on the All-Championship Team. VCU has now claimed the A-10 Title in all four of its last championship appearances: 2021, 2022, and 2024.
Trent Adelman hit VCU’s program-record 67th team home run of the season during the fourth inning. Pitchers Fenix DiGiacomo, Dawson Newman, and Cooper Campbell combined to allow just one run and eight hits throughout the game. Newman earned his fifth win after pitching three innings of one-hit ball with two strikeouts. Campbell picked up his third save by allowing only one run over five innings.
At bat, Nick Flores and Alec Warden each collected three hits, with Warden and Adelman driving in two runs apiece. Head Coach Sean Thompson achieved his first Atlantic 10 Title as head coach.
The Rams’ pitching staff set an early tone with seven consecutive scoreless frames. VCU capitalized on Rhode Island errors to take an early lead and expanded it significantly during a six-run fourth inning that featured key contributions from Flores, Kirkpatrick, Warden, Adelman, Lee, and more. Campbell maintained control until late in the game when Rhode Island scored its lone run; VCU quickly responded to secure their margin.
With this win, VCU advances to the NCAA Tournament for its first regional appearance since 2024. The NCAA Baseball Selection Show will announce opponents and locations on ESPN2 at noon Monday.
