Commonwealth of Virginia employees and preschool through 12th grade teachers, both public and private, are eligible for free admission to the exhibition “Frida: Beyond the Myth” at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) in Richmond. The exhibition, which runs through September 28, 2025, features the art and life of Frida Kahlo and is one of only two presentations in the United States.
“The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts welcomes schoolteachers and our colleagues from the Commonwealth of Virginia to see this summer’s blockbuster exhibition Frida: Beyond the Myth,” said Director and CEO Alex Nyerges. “Many of Frida Kahlo’s works are rarely seen outside of Mexico. I urge everyone to take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to see her artworks up close, and to learn more about the artist.”
The exhibition displays 30 works by Kahlo—including self-portraits, still lifes, and works on paper—alongside photographs, drawings, prints, and home movies created by those who knew her. Visitors will find English and Spanish interpretive texts as well as audio guides available with the show.
Eligible employees must present their work IDs or badges at VMFA’s Visitor Services desk to receive a free ticket; only one ticket is available per badge. Reservations for tickets can be made in person at the museum.
Tickets for “Frida: Beyond the Myth” are $20 for adults, $16 for seniors aged 65 or older, and $10 for youth ages 7–17 and college students with ID. Children under six years old, museum members, Commonwealth employees, pre-K–12 teachers, Museums for All participants (with EBT card), as well as active duty military personnel and their families through Blue Star Museums receive discounted or free entry.
The Dallas Museum of Art organized this exhibition with Dr. Agustín Arteaga and Sue Canterbury serving as co-curators. Dr. Sarah G. Powers curated it for VMFA.
Support comes from Altria Group as presenting sponsor along with numerous local foundations, endowments, families, individuals, marketing support from Charles G. Thalhimer Fund, and community partnership with the Virginia Hispanic Chamber.
VMFA is recognized as one of the largest comprehensive art museums in the country. Its permanent collection includes over 50,000 works spanning more than 6,000 years across various cultures. In recent coverage by The Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/travel/2023/07/21/best-art-museums-us/), VMFA was named among America’s top twenty art museums.
The museum remains open every day throughout expansion projects that have temporarily closed some galleries; general admission is always free.
