Washington, D.C. – On June 20, Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) welcomed Joshua Crenshaw, a senior from Varina High School in Henrico, to Washington to celebrate his success in the annual Congressional Art Competition. Joshua took first place for his piece, “Just Sitting,” which was created using charcoal on paper.
“It was great to meet Joshua in person and have the opportunity to congratulate him on his incredible piece of art,” said Congresswoman McClellan. “The Congressional Art Competition is an outlet for students to demonstrate their artistic capabilities, and Joshua certainly rose to the occasion with his charcoal drawing. Whenever I go to the House floor for votes, I get to walk past Joshua’s art, and it makes me happy to see Virginia’s Fourth so well represented here in the Capitol.”
Joshua and his father visited Congresswoman McClellan’s Washington, D.C. office before attending the Congressional Art Competition Reception. Joshua’s art will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year.
Background: Each spring, the Congressional Institute sponsors a nationwide high school visual art competition to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation and in each congressional district. Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
