Open Burning

The County of Albemarle, in an effort to achieve and maintain such levels of air quality as to protect human health, welfare, and the safety of its residents, has regulated open air burning within the county.

What is open air burning? The burning of any matter in such a manner that the products resulting from combustion are emitted directly into the atmosphere without passing through a stack, duct, or chimney.

Open Burning Map & Guidelines

In the coming weeks, ACFR will post safety tips and reminders specifically related to burning rules and regulations in Albemarle County on our social media pages. Today, we want to remind everyone that burning trash is illegal in Albemarle County, and aside from being dangerous, burning trash in Albemarle County is a class 1 misdemeanor, and could result in up to a $2,500 fine and a one year jail sentence.
