Richmond Fire Department  issued the following announcement on Aug. 17

This morning, members of Engine 20, Engine 21, Engine 22, our Executive Team and our Fire Prevention Unit participated in a neighborhood canvass near Sunday's fatal house fire on Banton Street. They spoke to dozens of citizens, installed several smoke alarms, and continued emphasizing our "Fire Safety Five to Stay Alive":

1️ Get out and stay out of a house on fire. Make and practice a fire escape plan.

2️ Clear the clutter, as it can become an obstacle to escape. Have a clear path to your exits.

3️ Do not overload extension cords and power strips. Major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall outlet.

4️ Have working smoke alarms and test them once a month. Replace your alarms after 10 years.

5️ Always smoke outside. Never smoke in bed. Make sure cigarettes and ashes are put out completely.

We started this campaign in the spring, following our fifth fatality this year due to house fires. Since the beginning of May, our crews have canvassed more than 15,000 homes across the City of Richmond and installed more than 250 smoke alarms. We've spoken to nearly 20 neighborhood associations about fire safety - hoping to prevent another tragedy. Unfortunately, we are now at eight fatalities.

Please be proactive to protect yourself and your loved ones. The best practices above can save your life. Help us continue the work
