Washington, D.C. – On April 19, Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan (VA-04) voted against H.J.Res. 42, a House disapproval resolution to nullify Washington, D.C.’s Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act.
President Biden stated he would veto H.J.Res. 42.
“House Republicans are meddling in local D.C. governmental affairs and attempting to stop an important piece of police reform and accountability legislation from becoming law,” said Congresswoman McClellan. “I opposed this disapproval resolution because I believe in the District of Columbia’s right to self-governance. Furthermore, this reform bill will ensure increased police accountability and public safety measures that will cultivate trust between communities and law enforcement. Congress should respect D.C.’s local government and the wishes of the nearly 700,000 voters that call the District home. I commend President Biden for preserving D.C.’s autonomy and home rule.”
D.C. Council’s recently passed police reform bill would permanently extend the temporary law enforcement transparency and accountability measures D.C. passed after the murder of George Floyd, like choke hold bans, improved training on racial profiling and bias, the mandated use of de-escalation tactics before the use of deadly force, public access to body camera footage, and more. The legislation is consistent with the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act supported by congressional Democrats last Congress.
The House passed H.J. Res. 42 by a vote of 229-189.
