Congresswoman Jennifer McClellan, representing Virginia's 4th district, has recently shared her thoughts on significant historical figures and current events through a series of tweets. These posts reflect on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Shirley Chisholm, and highlight recent achievements within her district.
On January 20, 2025, Congresswoman McClellan commemorated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Inauguration Day by reflecting on a question he posed in the final year of his life: "Where do we go from here? Chaos or community?" She expressed her choice to focus on building the "Beloved Community" for which Dr. King fought.
The following day, January 21, 2025, she honored Shirley Chisholm's historic achievement as the first Black woman sworn into Congress 56 years ago. McClellan noted that she is one of 29 Black women serving in the current Congress and emphasized the importance of celebrating Chisholm’s life and work over the next four years: "In the next four years, celebrating Shirley Chisholm’s life and work will be more important than ever."
Later that day, McClellan congratulated winners from Virginia's 4th district in the Congressional App Challenge. Saket Sambaraju and Abhinav Gitta developed an application called MelanomAI, capable of scanning images for melanoma skin cancer with a testing accuracy of 92.28%. She praised their innovation: "Congratulations to the VA-04 winners... Their application... can scan images... with a 92.28% testing accuracy."
